宇部市や下関市周辺で作られている硯で、赤間石（あかまいし）という石英（せきえい）や鉄分を多く含む石を原材料としています。赤間石が緻密な石質であることから、赤間硯では墨を細かくすることができ、発色の良い伸びやかな墨汁を得ることができます。大名や異国人、吉田松陰や高杉晋作ら多くの志士達に愛され、800年以上前の鎌倉時代初期には製作されていたとみられています。

The inkstone, made in the areas around Ube City and Shimonoseki City, uses a stone called Akama-ishi, which is rich in quartz and iron. Because Akama-ishi has a fine texture, Akama inkstones are able to grind ink finely, producing vibrant, smooth ink. These inkstones were beloved by many, including lords, foreigners, and patriots like Yoshida Shōin and Takasugi Shinsaku. It is believed that they were already being made in the early Kamakura period, over 800 years ago.
