紙布、または紙の布は、和紙の糸で織られた布の一種です。和紙の糸だけで織られた紙の布は「諸紙布」と呼ばれ、横糸に紙糸、経糸に絹や綿の糸を一緒に織った布は「絹紙布」や「綿紙布」と呼ばれます。絹紙布や綿紙布は、諸紙布に比べて丈夫で、より薄くて軽い生地に仕上がります。昔、職人たちは紙の産地で副業として紙布を生産していました。しかし、明治時代に始まった産業革命によって、繊維産業は安価な布に取って代わられ、紙布の伝統は忘れ去られてしまいました。
Shifu, or paper cloth, is a type of cloth woven out of washi paper threads. Paper cloth made from onlywashi paper is known as moroshifu, while cloth woven out of paper as well as silk or cotton threads isknown as Silk Paper Cloth and Cotton Paper Cloth. Silk and Cotton paper cloth are more durable andresult in a thinner and lighter fabric compared to moroshifu. Historically, craftsmen produced shifu as aside job in paper-making regions. However, due to the Industrial Revolution, beginning in the MeijiPeriod, the textile industry turned to cheap cloth, and the tradition of shifu was forgotten.
